B.A.D.G.E (Discipline)

The 3rd element of human success in selling or any field is Discipline. I was obese, close to 100 kgs & 39 inches of the waistline for most part of my work life. I tried all kinds of diet programs, Gyming with a personal trainer, etc but nothing seemed to work in the long run until I realized I needed to change my lifestyle and become self-disciplined. The self-discipline of eating small meals, eating homemade food, bringing proteins in daily food intake, eating dinner before 7 pm, drinking 12-14 glasses of water every day coupled with 1 hour of exercise or sports 6-days every week helped me to lose close to 25 kgs over a year. For the last 14 years, my weight has continued to be around 72 kgs. The pride is not in losing 25 kgs weight but in retaining the same weight for the last 14 years, and most importantly, I haven’t seen a doctor for all these years. B.A.D.G.E (CYCLING)

Another learning of mine to develop Attitude is “If life gives you lemons, make lemonade.” In life, most times, we may not get what we want. Due to my accident, I could not run Marathon, and therefore, I took up cycling as a sport to strengthen my legs. I joined cycling groups & started to train with them for long-distance cycling. In 2015, I set a goal to cycle 100 km & In Sept 2015, I achieved it 1st time by participating in a 100 km race. Cycling not only strengthened my leg but also improved my overall fitness.
2 years back, I achieved my career-best timing of 3 hrs & 52 mins to complete a 100 km race. There is always a reason why God has not given you something we wanted. Sometimes, God gives us lemons to discover our true potential. In my 22 years of experience, I observed people who become CEO’s in the late 30’s or early 40’s are a perfect combination of Intelligence plus attitude. The 2nd set of successful CEO’s in the late 40’s or 50’s are the ones who have the right attitude but they may or not may be intellectualy bright. I have also observed, very intelligent people with a poor attitude struggle to become great CEO’s. So my learning is with the right attitude you can and will develop the necessary technical skills. FMCG SALES EXECUTIVE

After failing as an entrepreneur in FY B.com, I worked as a Sales Executive in FMCG companies in my 4th and 5th years of college. I distinctly remember my experience in Nestle India Ltd, where we were selling sunrise coffee to roadside tea joints and cycleman who used to sell coffee on cycles in Mumbai. In this job, I learned how to make the customer experience/taste your product/coffee which improves their buy-in. I also learned the power of referrals in this job. The cyclewalas were a bunch of Tamil South Indians, so once we convinced a few key influencers, it became easier for us to persuade others to use Sunrise coffee and not Bru coffee.

DECIDED TO BECOME AN ENTEREPRENEUR

In 3rd year of college, I decided to become an Entrepreneur, so we started a small grocery shop called Nimesh General Stores behind my granny’s house. Here I learned the grocery chain management of stocking fast and slow-moving consumer goods, the credit cycle, and relationship management with clients & the sales staff of the FMCG companies. I also learned the most important thing in selling: asking questions and understanding customer behaviour & buying patterns.

PROSPECTING AND TELECAALING

In my 2nd year of college and due to my salesman experience in the 1st year, I got an offer to become a sales executive in a courier firm called Big Guy Couriers Ltd. Here I learned Prospecting through Yellow pages. I used to telecall to all the corporates from our office and then visited them to make presentations on our product offerings. I learned how to get an in-person meeting on the phone and later, I learned how to convert a prospect into a sale?

STARTED JOURNEY AS A SALESMAN

To meet my college expenses in year 1, I decided to take up a job. The only job I got was a door-to-door commission-earning salesman. I had no choice, so I accidentally joined sales. I used to carry 30 pieces of cookware or household items or toys and walked door to door in residential and commercial complexes. I still remember the harsh behaviour and the door’s noise banged on my face by residents seeing a salesman. This door-to-door cold calling experience helped me develop a positive attitude, willpower, and determination to succeed in any circumstances.
